Villa. Late C181early C19 remodelled mid C19. Whitewashed stuccoed stone rubble and
cob; slate roof with crested ridge tiles, gabled at ends; 2 rendered right end stacks,
left end stack to front of ridge, rear left lateral stack.
Plan: Double depth plan, 2 rooms wide with a central entrance into a passage
containing the stair, principal rooms to the front, rear left kitchen , rear right
service rooms.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic, symmetrical 3-bay front with a slated verandah on
posts; central half-glazed panelled front door with deep panelled reveals and
pilasters to the doorcase; French windows to left and right with glazing bars and
margin panes. 4-pane sashes to the first floor, louvred sliding shutters temporarily
removed at time of survey (1987). The left and right returns have curly barge boards
and casement windows lighting the attic rooms.
Interior: Very complete. Joinery includes probably late C18 panelled doors with
doorcases with mason's mitres; shutters and a good stick baluster stair with a
landing and a ramped handrail, plain plank doors to attic storey. Marble chimney
pieces and plaster cornices survive on the ground floor, timber to the first floor,
with iron grates.
Said to be documented to the late C18 (information from owner): the home of Captain
(later Admiral) James Noble (Cleland).
One of the earliest of the Bishopsteignton villas: attractive externally with a very
intact interior.
