Description

WEYMOUTH

SY6683 MILL STREET, Broadwey
873-1/8/442 (North side)
Firth monument and railings approx.
6m east of Church of St Nicholas

GV II

Chest tomb enclosed by cast-iron railings. The monument lies
immediately adjacent to the churchyard wall bounding the
Dorchester Road. Portland stone. To Lieutenant Firth, of the
70th Foot, d.1828. A simple Regency chest, similar to the
Bartlett monument (qv), but with ovolo-mould edge to the
ledger slab, fluted pilasters to the corners, and raised oval
inscription panel with sunk tympana containing carved fans.
The chest is enclosed by a low railing in Gothic design, with
pinnacled standards, set to a weathered stone plinth. The
railings are badly rusted, but otherwise remain complete.
