GV II

Lock, lock gates and basin. 1779 by engineer John Varley, with
later alterations and additions. Sandstone and red brick with
metal and wooden gates. Lock chamber with gates to either end
and attached basin up-river to the west side. Sandstone chamber
to lock with wooden gates, reinforced with metal, to either end.
Gates have wooden balance beams with metal handrails and rack
and pinion mechanisms to either side. Both sets of gates have
semi-circular footholds and bollards to either side. Chamber
of lock also has metal stepladder to north side. Basin to west
curves to north and has concrete copings. Part of the Erewash
Canal.
