GV II

House, C17 or early C18 with early C19 alterations. Roughcast stone with slate
roof. L-plan, 2 storeys, and 3-bay front facade. Windows are sashed with
glazing bars. Central entrance with gabled trellis porch. Gable-end stacks.
Left return of 4 bays, the 4th bay gabled. Slate dripcourse. Windows have
small-paned casements. Gable-end stack and stack parallel to roof ridge. Rear
has lean-to outhouse to front wing, with stair wing under cat slide roof to
angle, which has 3-light wood-mullioned windows with leaded glazing to both
sides; cat slide roof continued as canopy to return wing, possibly a gallery.
Interior has chamfered beams, plank and muntin partition and stair with turned
balusters and square newels. Wordsworth believed to have lived here while
attending Hawkshead Grammar School. Property of the National Trust.
