BRIDGE END

8/136 Road bridge over the
River Pant

GV II

Road bridge. Early C19 or earlier, altered in C20. Red brick in English bond,
with moulded V copings of red clay. Aligned NNW-SSE, with 2 segmental arches
aligned to river, NE-SW, and 4 buttresses each side. Long approach ramp to S,
shorter approach ramp to N, both with brick walls to each side similar to those
of the bridge. Strengthened in C20 with concrete arches. Iron ties through the
springs and buttresses, with S-plates and cast iron roundels, of which one on
each side has a foliate pattern, and a cast iron oval plate on the E side of the
S approach, half-sunk in the ground. On the E side of the N approach some
copings have been replaced in moulded concrete blocks of V form. On the W side
of the S approach the brick wall has been rebuilt in modern brick, with the
original copings replaced.
