Description

ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 NW 7/64 No 82 with No 82A (Philip Lodge) to 24.10.50 rear GV II* House, now with shop (to High Street) with large house to rear (No 82A). Late C18 front range added on to and in part incorporating the end portion of an early C16 house, substantially re-modelled in C17. Brick frontage; timber-framed to rear with brick underpinning, cladding and stacks. Kent-tile roofs throughout. The two components will be described separately. Front (No 82) forms part of a single-phase development which includes Nos 78 and 80 (qv): 3 window, 3 storey range with dormered attic in mansard roof. Upper floors with 4 or 6-pane sash windows; parapet and brick cornice continuous with Nos 78 and 80. Two flat roofed dormers. Shop window retains some c.1900 features. For interior features see below. Note: the front elevation should be considered in conjunction with Nos 78 and 80.

No 82A: a large 3-room, cross-passage house with the original services to the S (away from the street); the hall is of one bay with closed partitions to both ends and it seems unlikely that it was ever open to the roof. The whole building was modernised in the C17 when the upper rooms were heightened by the addition of front (W) gables; also added, a porch and rear stairs, and a large external rear stack to the upgraded service end. Exterior: the principal front faces W and its main elements are C17. To the left of the porch (to the cross passage), a 2 window range, gabled, with very shallow jetties to 1st floor and attic with moulded jetty beams. 1st floor 4 light casement windows with leaded panes and some original iron fittings, that to the left with ovolo moulded surround. Ground floor with a 3-light Yorkshire sash, and a 16-pane hornless sash window. Gabled 2 storey porch, brick below with round-headed doorway and 2-light casement window above. To the right, also gabled, with projecting storeyed gabled bay with Venetian window above (much original ironwork and some early leading) with two demi-figures (originally caryatids and not in situ). A pair of 12-pane hornless sash windows to ground floor. Plain brick return to right. Rear: massive external stack, part gabled. Interior: good stair, off-centre to rear of hall, with bulbous turned balusters, dentilled rail, and one newel still with foliated finial. C17 panelling to right-hand room; fireplace of c.1910. The room above (the principal C17 bedroom) with contemporary fireplace. The Venetian window, carefully repaired, with C17 latches, joinery and ironwork. Some of the original framing is visible with heavily jowelled posts. Evidence of mortices confirms that the lower-end hall partition was closed; that to the higher end is closed throughout. Roof space not accessible. Within No 82 High Street is a lateral stone fireplace with 4- centred hollow chamfered surround; one ceiling beam with quarter circle moulding.
