LECKHAMPTON CHURCH ROAD SO 91 NW (south side) 4/115 Caffold, Hefleham, Lawrence and Rost monuments in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, up to 7m north of the north aisle

Three chest tombs and one pedestal tomb south of the south aisle. Limestone. From east to west:- a) Chest tomb to Richard Caffold, died 1753 and other members of that family. Rectangular fielded inscription panel with inscription to Richard Caffold on the north side; fluted marginal panels either side. Similar inscription panel on the south side. Fielded inscription panel with an inset segmental head and an inscription at the west end. Cartouche-like panel at the east end. Thick capping with a moulded margin. b) William Hefleham chest tomb c3m north west of the preceding. Sunken rectangular inscription panel with acanthus decoration to the margin and an inscription to William Hefleham, died 1720 on the north side. Similar inscription panel with inscription to William Hefleham, died 1692 on the south side. Lyre-shaped ends with palm leaf decoration to the sides. Oval inscription panel with raised margin with foliate decoration and an inscription to Elizabeth, daughter of William Hefleham, died 1726 at the east end. Similar oval inscription panel with laurel leaf decoration and an eroded inscription at the west end. Thick capping with moulded margin. c) Lawrence family pedestal monument c5.5m north west of the preceding. Monument to John Lawrence, died 1788 and other members of that family. Moulded plinth with inset corners. Fielded inscription panels, some with beaded margins, on all four sides. Friezes above each inscription panel decorated with swags or palm fronds. The frieze on the north side is decorated with an urn onto which is painted 'Re----- --53 by E. Croome Son', fluted decoration flanked by bosses either side. Capping with moulded margin; pyramidal upper capping stone. The whole monument except the capping appears to have originally been painted black. d) William Rose monument c4m to the west of the preceding. Rectangular fielded inscription panel with an inscription to William Rose on the north side flanked by marginal panels decorated with raised strapwork. Similar but illegible inscription panel and marginal panels on the south side. Cartouche-like inscription panel with an illegible inscription at the west end. Sunken inscription panel with an inset segmental head and foliate margin at the east end. Deep capping with moulded margin.
