Summerhouse. Circa 1880s. Split logs on timberframe and at back
Malvern gneiss with brick dressings. Low-pitched slate roof with
gabled front and rear and deep eaves. Round gneiss rubble stack
on rear (NW) corner. PLAN: Overall square on plan. L-shaped room
on first floor with corner stack and integral balcony overhanging
basement which is set into the hillside at the back. Swiss chalet
style. EXTERIOR: 1 storey and basement. Wide asymmetrical gable
at front jetted out on corbelled log purlins over balcony on left
and integral bay on right with small 2-light casement with small
panes and sliding shutters pierced with heart shapes. Window and
plank door set back at centre and similar 3-light window on
left(s) return. The first floor is cantilevered out over basement
below which has horizontal boarded walls and plank door to right.
Stone rubble at rear. INTERIOR: Completely intact with match
board walls and ceiling between exposed rafters. Inglenook
fireplace in corner with canopy, shelf, seats and range.

NOTE: Said to have been the studio or childrens' playhouse of the
Worcestershire landscape painter David Bates who lived at Holly
Mount Cottage in the 1880s. The summerhouse is situated in the
former grounds of Holly Mount Cottage, a lodge at the entrance
to Holly Mount House, which in the 1830s belonged to the Duchess
of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria.
