Barn. C16 or earlier. Timber frame on low red brick sill (renewed), dark
weatherboarding, and hipped old red tile roof. A tall 5-bays barn facing
N, forming S range of farmyard. Central double doorway on N with raised
eaves and rafters over. Heavy jowled posts with curved braces to
wall-plate and tie-beams. Unjowled mid-bay posts and mid-height rail
tenoned in-line. Squint butted scarf joint in rear wallplate. 2 purlins
to each slope. Upper purlin clasped in angle of collar with undiminished
principal, lower purlin clasped between principal and a parallel deep
member jointed at top and bottom into underside of collar and top of
tie-beam. The underside of this member is curved like an arched brace.
Straight long wind-braces to upper purlin. Flat laid rafters. Small door
into W end. The roof construction is unique in this part of
Hertfordshire.
