Poole family chest tomb in churchyard, one metre north of nave, Church of St John the Evangelist
(Formerly listed as Poole family chest tomb in churchyard, one metre north of nave, Church of St John)
Chest tomb. Early C19. By J Withey of Taunton. Portland and blue lias stones. Flat topped, ashlar columns, chamfered plinth. Inscribed at considerable length on north front to Capt Robert Poole "a man distinguished alike by an enterprising spirit and inflexible integrity", died 1833, and briefly at the west end to Joseph Poole 'who after sailing round the Globe with Captain Cooke departed this life October 3rd 1791.' The description of Capt. Poole's life makes most edifying reading.
