ST 22 NW CHEDDON FITZPAINE A361 (south side) 5/251 Maidenbrook Farmhouse with attached barn and walls

Farmhouse. Early C17, C18 and C19. Mainly rough render on rubble, some exposed rubble, some greensand slates in one gable wall, slated roofs, but tile on attached outbuilding. A complex building with early cross wing at north end nearest road a second crosswing to south, and the whole joined to form a broad 'U' plan; development of plan not known in detail. Entrance, or west front in 2 storeys, at ground floor a large C19 or C20 square bay to flat roof, and a glazed door under front canopy on props. At eaves three small wood casements in 2:3:2 lights. Lofty brick stack to left gable. To right is gable end of south block with deep verge and large external stack with pent-roofed offset or bread oven to right. Small 2-light casement top left. To left is lofty rendered stone boundary wall to about 2-8 metres, series of piers, tile coping. South front has central stair projection with 3-light mullioned window with leading; to left a canted bay with slate roof under 3-light casement, to right a door under C20 porch, and projecting element under pent roof. Return front, to east, has broad gable with 3-light casement at each level; set-back centre section with French door under a 3-light casement in a flush gabled dormer and a small light to eaves left. Small eaves stack to right, then lofty gable end brought forward, with 2-light casement low right and single light first floor left. Two brick ridge stacks to this transverse block, of which north wall is in unrendered rubble. A small gabled single-storey outbuilding at right angles continues with wide door in boundary wall linking to gabled barn in rubble with pantile roof. This has early 2-light wood casement with shutters and large sandstone quoins: a 5-step mounting block lies adjacent to the gable end. The north front of the principal building has an early wide plank door in deep reveals, facing a narrow courtyard to the barn, which has a further 2-light shuttered mullioned opening on its south front. Main block has 3-light casement at first floor and 2 laylights to roof; small attic light on west gable. INTERIOR: many features of interest throughout the building include broad chamfered beams with stops to kitchen in north wing, and heavy bressummer oven boiler recess. The 'nursery' in upper level of north range has deep chamfered beam within bold stop, 2 peaked-head doorways with thick plank and batten doors and flat 4-centred fireplace with edge mould. West range has substantial 2-purlin and heavy principal roof structure. East range at north end has large stone fireplace in very flat 4-centre, on moulded jambs and very deep flush lintol. Interior not inspected, but information from slides provided by Taunton Deane District Council. A very important farmhouse needing a full archaeo- logical exploration; the exterior gives little evidence for the internal richness.
