Lock and public road bridge. 1824-1827 restored C20. Brick lock chamber. Two
sets of double wooden gates with concrete balance beams. Counterweighted ground
paddle gearing at top, with metal ball weights. Counterweighted gate paddle gear-ing at bottom, with metal cylindrical weights. This type of paddle gearing is
unique to the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. Across the lock tail is the bridge.
Brick. Single horseshoe arch, band, solid parapet with brick coping and piers
with stone coping. The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal was constructed between
1824-1827 with James Hollinsworth as engineer.
