First rated 1797. Large house showing Adam influences, probably by same hand as
Mendip and Welshmill House, Welshmill Road (qv). Built for local worthy, George
Sheppard. Symmetrical ashlar front. Hipped slate roof, blocking course, moulded
cornice, rusticated plinth, band at 1st floor level and moulded cill band to all
1st floor windows. Carved string over 1st floor windows. Recessed and rounded
corners. 2 storeys, 5 windows, glazing bar sashes in reveals. Outer centre 1st
floor openings are set in round headed recesses with moulded architrave surrounds
and impost bands; these windows have pediments on consoles, blind panels over and
garlanded panels below. Remaining windows in plain reveals. Central slightly
projecting tripartite doorway, cornice with garlanded frieze on consoles, double
glazed doors, and narrow side lights. 1 later doorseach side of doorway. 4
window return elevation with irregular charm of levels to left - similar treatment
and central coved niche on ground floor. Rear altered but retains part of an
8-light ground floor window to left of centre with moulded stone mullions; also an
oval tablet in reeded surround to right on 1st floor. Return to north partly 3
storeys; ground floor window to left has 5 light flat mullion and transom window.
Interior: stone top lit stairs with cast-iron balusters. Ball flagged with small
diamond stones set in corners.
