SHURTON

Shurton Court and No.2 Shurton
Court
(Shurton Court previously listed)

House. Early C17 farmhouse enlarged late C18, again c1925. Rendered over random rubble, moulded plinth, facade divided
between ground floor and upper storeys by 2 pairs of Ionic pilasters with string course between, steeply pitched double
Roman tile roof, brick stacks at rear. Plan: double pile C18 house facing roughly South, remains of 3 cell and cross
passage farmhouse at rear, enlarged on West front c1925. South front: 2 storeys plus attic, 5 bays; attic 2-light
casements, rest 12 pane sash window with central Venetian window above entrance, open pedimented doorcase carried on
Doric colums with frieze, leaded fanlight, C20 glass door. Interior not viewed. Farmhouse, now No.2 Shurton Court,
contains chamfered beams with stops, bressumer across fire- place bay with cambered heads to former stair and smoking
chamber bay by flanking modern grate. Remains of plank and muntin screen probably concealed behind wallpaper to left.
The facade of Shurton Court before alterations, would have been very similar to that of Kilve Court, Kilve CP (qv) and
is probably by the sale designer. (Photograph in NMR),
