VANTORTS ROAD 1. 5253 (East Side) No 17 (Fair Green House) TL 4844 1473:3/67 6.6.52 II GV 2. C16 or earlier hall house. Early C17 parallel rear range. Refronted and extended in C18 (RCHM Typescript). Timber frame plastered, stuccoed brick C18 front. Steep old red tile roofs with small lead covered flats. Red brick chimneys. Stucco front extended to S as high red brick wall with plinth and broad buttresses. To N is short wall, then small and then double high boarded gates with moulded capping,on square posts.with moulded caps and iron overthrow to small gate. Main front on W has 3 unbalanced parts. At N a 2 storey, 3 window stucco section with plinth, floorband and coved eaves cornice to tile roof hipped at corner. Recessed sash windows with 3/6 panes on 1st floor and 6/6 panes on Gd floor. At S, a single storey and parapet 2 window stucco section with plinth, floor band and coping to parapet carrying light iron railing. The 5 window, 2 storeys and attic stucco middle section is symmetrical in itself with a broad central bay breaking forward with 1 window over door and parapet raking up to a blunt point in front of a 2 light rounded topped dormer. This part in advance of other two, with plinth and floor band running through,but taller 1st floor windows, moulded cornice and parapet above. For a length corresponding to this middle section, the ridge of the roof has been trimmed down and covered in lead level with the tops of dormers on its rear slope. This appears to have been to reduce the visual dominance of the old roof when the building was refronted in C18. 2 windows each side of centre bay. Recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes. Imposing wooden Doric doorcase with pilasters and full entablature, moulded architraves, triglyph frieze and modillioned cornice. An historic house with complex development. Important in group around Fair Green.
