Early C18. Remodelled in mid C18. Raised and extended in C19. 3 storeys
and attics. Red brick house of 3 main periods facing E, with rear wing at
NW of 3 storey and attics plastered and weatherboarded with upper storey
jettied on N. All under steep old red tile gabled roofs, with multi-
shafted C19 gable chimneys. Brick and weatherboarded tiled lean-to on S
end with large boarded gable facing south. Stair tower in angle between
wings serves only Gd and 1st floor. Original appears to have been an early
C18 rectangular red brick house of 2 storeys facing E with 2 room-central
entrance plan and with brick floor band at front and continuous projecting
band at eaves. The lower 2 storeys of the rear wing and the stair tower
may belong to this house or possibly to an earlier front block. In mid-
C18, the front-was adorned with 2 brick,2 storey canted bay windows with
flush box sash windows with 6/6:8/8:6/6 panes on each floor and dentilled
top cornice. Of the same period is the fine Doric wooden porch now
repositioned. This has fluted Roman Doric columns free standing,
supported a full entablature together with pilasters flanking the 6 panel
raised and fielded door. In the C19, the front block was raised a further
full storey with 3 recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes, a steep old red
tile roof with bellcast and dentilled eaves cornice returning under verges
at each end. Large 3 shaft moulded gable chimney to N and S gable and 2
small 4 paned tiled gabled dormers in front slope of roof. Bay windows
given tiled hipped roofs and porch brought forward under low pitched
bargeboarded gable of tiled roof to brick porch. 1 full storey, jettied
to N, added to rear wing with flush box sashes with 6/6 panes, and gabled
tiled dormers in roof slope with 2 light Yorkshire casement, 6 panes each
light, on N and S and large projecting gable with 6/6 paned sash on S.
Projecting W gable chimney with 4 decorated shafts and lateral stack on N
with 2 shafts. N side of rear wing plastered but S side weatherboarded
with 8/8 paned sashes to 2nd and 1st floors. Roundheaded window with
margin lights to 2 storey stair. Gd floor lean-to conservatory on W of
main block and tall oriel to upper floor of 2 storey S lean-to. A complex
picturesque house of many periods standing on prominent hillside position.
