Mill building for carpet yarn. 1864-70 for Thomas Lea. Red brick with blue
and buff brick bands and features, stone dressings, slate roof with eleven
ridge vents. A large rectangular building of four storeys. Stone coped
pediment and gables. On either side of south, 5 bay pediment wall a one bay turret projects to east and west. A short wing, one bay deep and three bays
wide, projects from the west wall at the north end with a similar turret set
into the re-entrant angle. An opposing turret on the east wall all the
turrets have pyramidal slate roofs. Eighteen window bays between turrets on
east and west sides (3.1.18.1). The whole building is crowned by a stone
eaves cornice supported on deep closely spaced buff brick moulded corbels.
Between corbels a decorative square panel of blue and buff bricks over a continuous moulded string course. The corners of the main block, wing and
turrets have clasping pilaster buttresses with alternating bands of red and
blue brick. The ground floor windows are set under semicircular arches with
flush raised key blocks on moulded stone impost. Windows to floors above
have slightly pointed segmental arched heads in alternating bands of blue
and buff brick linked by bands in buff brick. All windows have continuous
stone string course cills. Some original fixed sashes with glazing bars (3
x 3 panes) with pivoted sash above upper transom. Other windows have later
brick blocking. A pierced stone framed lunette opening in each pediment. Interior not inspected.
