Terrace retaining wall, steps and arcaded fountain. 1811-20 by Robert Smirke,
altered. 1870s by G E Fox and arcaded fountain late 1880s by Fox for Lady Henry
Somerset. Retaining wall approximately 5 m high. Coursed and squared rubble,
corbelled out, embattled, ashlar parapet. Squared projection at north end and
smaller off-centre projection. At the south-west end is a flight of steps down
to the lower terrace. Set against this flight is a tall, triple arcade, in
the centre of which is set a relief panel of arms and supporters and a central
spout. The spout feeds into a freestanding pillar fountain enriched with
waterleaf ornament, a stag's head and a fishscale top. The basin of the
fountain is surrounded by a low wall.
