3/51 Forge Cottage
GV II
Pair of cottages, now cottage. Probably C18. Probably for Richard Payne
Knight. Sandstone rubble, tiled roof and rear stack with brick shaft.
Rectangular plan with four structural bays and central rubble cross wall,
aligned north-east/south-west. One storey and attic. South elevation
has two windows, 2-light wrought-iron C18 casements in gabled dormers.
Ground floor casements have three lights. Ledged C18 door to right-hand
side. Rear elevation has small central projection with bread oven rising
to gable divided by brick stack. Interior has ledged doors with strap
hinges. Trusses have king-posts each with one queen post, providing jambs
for asymmetrical attic doors. Heavy beams with lamb's tongue run-out chamfer
stops. Oak floor boards, one with C18 initial "RK", possibly indicating a
batch of timber for Payne Knight.
