Milestone. Circa early C19. Painted stone with cast-iron plates. Small square stone with cast-iron plates on two sides inscribed: Whitchurch 3, Winchester 15 and Newbury 9. The Winchester and Newtown River turnpike was opened in 1762 and this is one of a series of milestones on the turnpike.
A good example of a circa early C19 milestone with inscribed cast-iron plates.
