13/23 Ower House
II

House. c1830. Roughcast with slate roof and end brick chimneystacks. 2 parallel
ranges, 2 storeys 3 windows. Entrance front is in left side elevation. 2 gables
with wooden bargeboards. 2 early C19 type 12-pane sashes on 1st floor in cambered
architrave, similar window to ground floor left and tall 24-pane modern sash to
right. Doorcase has open wooden pediment on curved brackets, pilasters, round-headed
doorcase with semi-circular fanlight, panelled reveals, reeded architraves with
square floral paterae and 6 fielded panelled door. Garden elevation has 3 12-pane
sashes with cambered architrave to 1st floor and 3 full height French windows to
ground floor, 16-pane double doors with folding shutters behind. Rear elevation
has right side chimneystacks and 2 early C19 flat roofed dormers with 16 panes in
moulded architraves. 1st floor has 1 mid C19 9-pane sash with horns, the others
are C20 casements. Ground floor has 4 C20 casements (1 metal framed), C20 door
and C19 low 14 x 4 panes with centre opening. Attached to the house by a wall is
an L-shaped early to mid C19 stabling and domestic offices wing, both 1 storey
painted brick, part slate roofed, part tiled. Slate roofed part is probably mid
C19 and has 5 openings with planked doors and verandah on 3 wooden piers. Tiled
range, which was stabling, has 2 8-pane windows, a blocked central opening and
remains of wooden pump with stone horseshoe-shaped bowl. Left side modern garage
doors. Interior of house has lounge and dining room connected by 6-fielded panelled
double doors and cornice with plumed decoration and floral motifs. First floor
has some 2 panelled doors. Top of staircase retains early C19 stick balusters and
turned newel post. Through purlin roof.
