Medium-sized country house. 1891 by W R Lethaby for Lord Manners. Brick, stone
dressings, garden front has bays and gables once pargetted, now tilehung, also
flint or stone and brick chequerwork,plain tile roof. One of the archetypal Arts
& Crafts buildings. Plan of irregular E-shaped 3 storey house with attached
service ranges; 4 wide bay central part, only one room and passage wide, on garden
side one bay projecting wings, on entrance side wings 2 or 3 bays wide,part in
front of outer bays of central part;and infront of centre bays single storey
projection; to one end altered 2 storey service ranges. Entrance front has to
RH 2 bay wide projecting wing containing porch and set back 3rd bay of wing on RH
end. Huge stone arched hood and doorcase to segmental-head double door. Large
7 x 3 light mullion and transom window beside. Over 3-light stone windows with
wider, segmental head central arch, on 2nd floor 3-light casements. Parapet wall with
ramp up from corners and central diagonally set 4 shaft stack. Each side on stone
plinth, stone peacocks. In centre, low projection has segmental head casements,
and parapet ramped-up in centre to stone bellcote. Behind on let and 2nd floors
assorted casements and in centre, breaking cornice,stack starting from 2nd floor
with clock face set on it and diamond shafts over. Other projecting wing
2 storey 2 bay with ground floor large segmental head casements, and moulded
cornice to hipped roof. All windows have leaded lights. Garden front well-known,
with projecting one bay wing one end and huge stack at other, between 4 large gables
and between those 2 storey canted bays. Interior almost unaltered. Surprisingly
