House, early or mid C16 in 2 stages. 2-cell lobby-entrance plan. 2 storeys.
Timber-framed and plastered. Hipped thatched roof, with axial C17 chimney of
narrow gault bricks with sawtooth shaft. Mainly C19/C20 casements, some with
leaded lights. Boarded entrance door in pantiled lean-to C20 extension. A
complete and unusual house, with a 2-bay hall with queen-post roof: the open
truss has square queen posts on a cambered tie-beam, the post-heads jowled
with archbraces up to a collar and to in-pitch purlins. The front wall has a
middle rail, and a blocked 4-centred arched entrance doorway into a lobby; the
rear wall is without either a middle rail or a doorway. Large back-to-back
C16 fireplaces to hall and parlour. The parlour cell was rebuilt mid or late
C16 with coupled-rafter roof. Both cells have massive framing, with
unchamfered floor joists (in the hall the deeply chamfered binding joist has
pyramid stops), arch-braced studwork and diamond-mullioned windows (one has
been glazed in C20). An early example of a 2-cell lobby entrance house; the
original second cell would have been a small unheated service room (c.p.
Garden Cottage, Stonham Aspal, Item 5/180).
