4/9 Barn, 20m north of
Whitehouse Farmhouse
GV II
Barn, mid C16. 5 bays. Timber-framed and weatherboarded; some original
wattle and daub infill. Asbestos sheeted roof, hipped and gabletted (once
thatched). A set of 4 C20 boarded barn doors at the centre bay, south side.
The east end bay was originally floored at mid-height, and used as stabling;
the loft above was not divided off from the barn, but had 4-light diamond
mullioned windows on two sides. Good complete arch wind-braced studding and
wind-braced clasped-purlin roof. The arch-braces from the open trusses have
been mainly replaced with C19 bolted knees. Probably contemporary with
farmhouse.
