Library. 1902. T. Shelmerdine. Red brick and stone
dressings, slate roof. 1 storey with attic to central 3
bays, 5 bays in all. End bays project under gables. Flush
stone banding and top cornice; stone coped gables. End bays
have Venetian windows with rusticated colonnettes,
pulivinated frieze and cornice forming hood over central
light; sashes with glazing bars. Single tripartite windows
flank entrance with cornice over. Band decorated with
cartouches and foliage bears the inscription "TOXTETH
LIBRARY", entablature over, with eared architraves and
triple keystones; small-pared casements. Gable flanked by
obelisk finials and scrolls; round-headed recesses with
architraves and triple keystones at apexes contain
cartouches and have open segmental pediments. Centre round-
arched entrance with carved keystone, Ionic columns and
pilasters, and deeply-projecting round-arched hood on
foliated consoles. Central louvre has 4 Tuscan aedicules
with open pediments and round-headed louvred openings,
supporting lead cupola. 5-bay return to Upper Parliament
Street has central 2 bays breaking forward under gables,
with Venetian windows. Interior: Segmental vaulted entrance
hall. Central bays have glazed dome over galleried hall.
End bays have coffered segmental vaults, that to north has
painting in lunette.Copper plaque in entrance records
opening, richly decorated and set with enamel roundels.
