5/65 Fortrey tomb at Churchyard of St. John the Baptist

Obelisk tomb. Mid C18. Stone, slate and wrought iron. Abutting the centre of the E end of the Church (q.v.) a finely carved table tomb with obelisk over. The tomb is carved with an elaborate cartouche of the Fortrey arms on the end and, on either side,a slate plaque with carved volutes and balusters to left and right. On top of the table slab, standing on 4 ball pads, a moulded obelisk with cornice top and carved urn finial. Angel heads or cartouche halfway up the sides. The tomb stands on high moulded plinth. Around 3 sides of this (4th is E wall of Church) are wrought iron railings with scrolled panels and crestings at intervals and alternating spear-head and diamond top finials. The whole is c6m high. Inscriptions to William Fortrey, died 1722, and wife, died 1733. Erected by their son William Fortrey, who also built the Church. Pevsner.
