1/119 Outbuilding at Manor Farm
GV II
Disused outbuilding, possibly former dwelling. C16 or earlier. Coursed ironstone
rubble, the original roof removed and replaced by one that is almost flat.
Single celled structure, formerly with 2 storeys. Doorway in centre of north
elevation, with rough timber lintel and stone jamb chamfered internally. One
very low window on each side, with stone jambs and heads, their position indicative
of a change in ground level. Upper 2-light wood mullioned window with wood
lintel. String course. South elevation has traces of a former ground floor
opening, to the left, a round arched head with voussoirs. Above, a large
window with chamfered stone surround. Additional stone window at first floor
level in east gable. Inside, a 4-centred arched and chamfered stone fireplace
in centre of south wall is partially obscured by the risen floor level.
The building is known locally as the Chapel and its site suggests the possibility
that it might be a fragment of a small monastic hospital founded at Tilton
in the C13 but whose later history is obscure.
