7/30 Gate Houses and gateway
to Chilham Castle

GV II

Gate houses and gateway. Circa 1922. Sir Herbert Baker. Two
identical gate houses. Red brick, ashlar dressings and plain
tile roof. Two storeys on plinth, moulded stone cornice
to ground floor, plat band to first floor and gable with ball
finials, and ashlar quoins. 3 light stone mullion window on
first floor, 4 light stone mullion on ground floor. Entrance
in side front (within gates). Each gatehouse with brick wall
10 feet to gate, with plank door in 4 centred arched opening, to
brick gate pier on weathered stone plinth surmounted by large
stone urn; the cornice from the the house carried over both wall
and gate pier. Gates:heavy solid boarding with spearheaded spikes
along ridge. Walls:attached to left and right of gatehouses,
7 feet high, 7 feet in length, with coping tiles to right
hand section, oversailing brick courses on left hand section.
