PARKHURST ROAD
St Mary's Hospital

(Formerly listed as The Isle of Wight Hospital)

II
The original portion was erected as the result of an Act of Parliament of 1770 and so is one of the comparatively few of such institutions surviving which were built prior to the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. This original portion forms a large L, or two sides of a square which was never completed to form a courtyard.

Two storeys. North side has 19 windows, east side 18 windows. Formerly there were dormers. Red brick. Tiled roof. Glazing bars intact. The centre portion of the north side to the width of five window bays is of grey headers with red brick window dressings quoins and cornice. Pediment containing a lunette window. Round-headed rusticated doorway on the ground floor. Extensive modern hospital additions and lift shaft added.
