Series of five C17/18 bridges on site of a Roman causeway on King Street, a
branch of Ermine Street. A tablet on one has inscription - "These several bridges
were built at the general charge of the whole County of Northampton in the year
1652". Restored in 1721. VCH Northants Vol II page 502.
Beginning at the south end the southernmost bridge built of ashlar has 4 round
arches with stopped chamfers, 3 cutwaters with refuges on upstream (west) side,
and parapet with saddle-back coping.
Second bridge: similar, but 3 arches, without chamfers, has buttresses with
set-offs between arches on east side.
Cutwater on west side has inscription and date 1642 and another dated 1916 (date
of repair).
Third bridge: similar, 3 arches without chamfers, centre arch has keystone,
buttressed on east side.
Fourth bridge: similar, single arch without chamfer, buttressed on east side,
no cutwaters or refuges.
Northernmost (fifth) bridge: similar, with 2 chamfered arches, one cutwater
on west side, and buttresses with set-offs on east side.
