Description

LEE BROCKHURST C.P. LEE BROCKHURST SJ 52 NW 11/11 Manor Farmhouse - 7.3.86 GV II Farmhouse. Circa 1600, extended early C19 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed now mainly roughcast with painted brick and sandstone additions; machine and plain tile roofs. L-plan comprising hall range of 2½ framed bays to right and gabled 2-bay cross-wing slightly projecting to left; hall range extended in brick by one bay to right in early C19 and mid-C19 stone addition in angle to rear. One storey and attic to hall range, 2 storeys and attic to cross-wing. Mid-C19 casement fenestration; hall range has one 3-light window to right with contemporary gabled eaves dormer directly above; small window to left above C19 ornamental gabled wooden porch with 4-panel door (top panels now glazed). Cross-wing has one C19 casement on each floor and jettied attic supported on rendered corner brackets. One C19 leaded casement to ground floor of C19 addition. Red brick ridge stack (formerly integral to gable end) at junction between hall range and C19 addition, which has dentilled eaves cornice and its own integral end stack. Cross- wing has late C19 integral lateral stack to left and contemporary end stack to rear gable. Framing: square panelling and close studding with wattle and daub and red brick infill recently exposed to left first-floor wall of cross-wing at time of resurvey (January 1986). C19 brick lean-to attached to right of early C19 addition and Salop Fire Insurance plate fixed to porch. Interior: timber frame partly exposed throughout the C17 part including to cross-walls, square panels and close studding with straight tension braces; deep-chamfered spine and cross beams with a variety of straight-cut and run-out stops, chamfered joists, including to first floor of cross-wing. Infilled inglenook fireplace to hall range and stepping to stack on first floor. Front ground-floor room of cross-wing has C18 wall cupboard with H-hinges and C19 cupboard flanking fireplace in left wall; C17 wainscot panelling to rear room. C17 panelled doors, some with L-hinges, to both floors and C19 cast-iron grates in several of fireplaces on first floor. Staircase with plain stick balusters is probably C19. Contemporary dairy fittings and stone-flagged floor in C19 addition to rear. Cross- wing has collar and tie beam roof in 2 bays with double purlins and V-struts from collars; similar roof to hall range has raking struts from collars. The cross-wing was apparently built before the hall range.
