Description

ROUSHAM ROUSHAM PARK GARDENS
SP4724
14/220
Praeneste

(Formerly listed as Praeneste,
....)

GV II*
Garden loggia.1738-40, by William Kent. Rusticated limestone with ashlar
dressings and ironstone to imposts and plinths; flat lead roof. 7-bay arcade of
open-pedimented arches. Balustrade carried across top of rear wall is terminated
by terms of Jason and Hercules. Interior: stone-flagged floor.
Quadripartite-vaulted bays alternate with niches for statues. Each bay has
garden seat by Kent, each with curved backs, turned legs and finely-carved
detail. An important 'hinge' in the layout of the gardens, the visitor conducted
past the balustrade with Dying Gaul (q.v.) and then given a view of the arcade
on the return walk along the river. Design based on the larger terraced
forecourt of the Temple of Fortune at Palestrina near Rome. Forms a part of the
landscape gardens laid out by William Kent, c.1733-40.
(Rousham Park is included in the H.B.M.C. Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade
I; Buildings of England: Oxfordshire: p745)
