range immediately north of
Sonde Farmhouse

Barn with integral stables and cowhouse. Circa early to mid C19.
Flemish stretcher bond red brick. Machine tile roof with shaped
brick coping to gable parapets with stone kneelers.
PLAN: L-shaped on plan with 3-bay barn and integral cowhouse in
the main range with integral stables at right angles to the barn.
EXTERIOR: SW front barn has large segmental arch cart doorway
rebated for plank double doors, large round pitching eye to left
with stone cill flanked by diamond pattern ventilation holes.
Lower single storey cowhouse to left with 2 doorways and 3
windows with segmental arch heads. Stable wing projects on right
with central doorway with plank door and flanking windows all
with segmental arches; pitching eye in gable end with pigeon
holes above. On SE side the gable end of barn has giant arch
pierced with ventilation holes in brickwork. Rear NE has central
cart entrance to barn with flanking pitching eyes with stone
cills and diamond pattern ventilation holes; lower cowhouse on
right with double doors to left.
INTERIOR: 3-bay barn with tie-beam and queen-strut roof, the
struts only supporting the purlins without principal rafters and
ridgeboard intact. Stables has chamfered soft wood ceiling beam
and unchamfered joists; the stalls missing.
