North Walsham is a medieval market town that grew wealthy from the trade of wool and cloth. The town was largely rebuilt following a fire in 1600 but remained a significant market centre into the Industrial Revolution.
1 Market Place is an early C17 building. The 1842 tithe map shows that it was previously formed a continuous property with 2 Yarmouth Road. It belonged then to Mary Ann Powell and comprised a house, yard and garden. At some point after that date the properties were separated, and a shop was introduced at the ground floor of 1 Market Place.
