Two chest tombs approximately 2
metres east of Church of St Mary
GV II
Pair of chest tombs. Mid C19. Finely-carved ashlar, both have
corner balusters, moulded fielded side panels with paterae,
fluted frieze, deep roll-moulded top slab with fine lettering.
The northern, larger tomb commemorates John Robinson of Thorp
Stapleton, d.1834; wife, Mary, d.1864; William Robinson of
Knostrop, d.1873, John Henry Waite, grandson and son of Thomas
Waite 'of thorphall colliers' (sic), d.1888; Mary, daughter of
John, d.1896. Smaller tomb: Walter, d.1851, Alfred, d.1863,
and John William, d.1873, Robinson, all sons of William and
Harriet Robinson of Knostrop Road; John Henry Waite, grandson,
d.1886.
