Barracks hospital, later sergeant's mess, now housing. c1793, by J Johnson, architect for the Barrack Department; altered 1920-1950. Yellow stock brick with hipped slate roof. Single-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys; five window range. Symmetrical front has a mid-C20 doorway and door, with inserted windows to the left; remaining windows have segmental-arched heads to eight/eight pane horned sashes. On the left-hand side is a single-storey lean-to.
INTERIOR: rebuilt c1930.
HISTORY: the original barracks hospital, though much altered internally. Hounslow is the only surviving barracks of the first national barrack building campaign in England, authorised by Pitt for internal policing of major cities. The hospital is part of the original plan of the barracks, and one of only three barracks hospitals of this period, with those at Higher barracks, Exeter, and Poundbury barracks, Dorchester. Included for historic interest.
