Description

TQ 3177 VASSALL ROAD, SW9
(South side)
963/8/10040
No. 96 (Caretaker's house to the
Church of St John the Divine)

GV II

Caretaker's house for the Church of St John the Divine. 1954 by H S Goodhart-Rendel. Stock brick with pantiled hipped roofs with gablets and catslide to rear. Two storeys, near square plan.
Entrance on side facade at right angles to road. Small, nearly square windows with central mullions, a simplified version of the glazing to the main house. In its position it forms a lodge to No. 92, the vicarage (q.v.). A rare opportunity for Goodhart-Rendel to build in an updated version of the secular Gothic style of G E Street, whose adjacent church he was restoring. The result was characterful and strong.
