Undercroft shop, Row shop and former accommodation and rear
dwelling now used as offices. 1861. By Edward Hodkinson. For
Mr Ewen, hosier. Sandstone, painted English garden wall bond
brickwork and grey slate roof with ridge at right angle to
street.
EXTERIOR: 4 tall storeys including undercroft and Row; one
bay; Tudor Revival. C20 shopfront to street; hollow-chamfered
sandstone end-piers to undercroft and Row storeys. The heavy
Row-front balustrade has a moulded timber rail on
spiral-moulded balusters; half-octagon responds carry a
possibly reused C17 chamfered bressumer on quadrant brackets
with mouchettes in spandrels and end-pendants; sloped boarded
stallboard; flagged Row walk; frontage to rear of Row has
covered door to No.13 and a modern shopfront unoccupied in
August 1990 when inspected; a basket arch, now splatterdashed,
across each end of Row walk; plaster ceiling. The upper
storeys are painted stone-dressed brick; a stone mullioned and
transomed window to the third storey has a steep sill and a
pediment above the lintel; a stepped 3-light mullioned window
to the fourth storey has a transom and upper light to the
central portion only; a recessed stone panel dated 1861. The
moulded stone cornice to the front gable has 3 plump octagonal
finials; a lateral chimney set back, south.
INTERIOR: the undercroft is lined; the Row shop, No.15, could
not be inspected, but is noted to have a lined shop with
ancillary rooms containing 2 mid C19 fireplaces, a C19
cast-iron lavatory cistern and wash basin. No.17 (qv) occupies
the upper storeys. The front portion has plaster cornices. A
narrow rear wing leads to a former dwelling behind, apparently
intended for independent occupation; its south face has an
altered door in a painted stone case with sidelights, 4 square
piers and an entablature; the windows have painted stone sills
and cambered arched heads, probably mid C19; a tripartite sash
of 4;12;4 panes to the Row storey; three 12-pane sashes to the
third storey; two 9-pane sashes to the fourth storey;
miscellaneous windows to the east gable; rear stone steps from
the yard to the undercroft; a later C19 south extension has no

visible features of special interest.
