Bus Station garage and attached service block. 1931-2. For East Surrey Traction
Company ("Bell Street", p.114). Red-brown brick in English bond, rear of garage
rendered and with applied timber-framing; plain tile roof to garage, corrugated
felted roof to service block. Large, single-storey garage, roughly triangular on plan
with lower, single-storey, rectangular service block projecting forward from right end.
Small-pane windows.
Garage: 2 wide bus entrances with folding topglazed board garage doors; between
them a full-height, transomed window in hipped roofed projection; similar window
to canted left-end bay; roof hipped at left end, with apex taller than ridge of
main roof giving effect of pyramidal roof. At right end, narrow bay at right angles
with full-height, transomed, 2-light window links garage to service block.
Service block: 2 bay forecourt elevation has, on left, full-height, transomed,
2-light windows, central one with door; on right, full-height square-headed opening,
top part bricked-in, lower part with modern door and windows under canopy; parapet
with offset, soldier-brick coping below waney-edged-weather-boarded gable. Lesbourne
Road elevation: left-end bay, with parapet returned, has 3 tall windows in square-headed
recess; 6 lower bays to right have concrete lintel band over wide windows, right
one full-height, and soldier-brick coping; roof hipped at right end.
Rear of garage: brick plinth; taller gabled bays towards either end with braced
close-studding framing tall triple windows; rest of range has 3-light windows set
below eaves.
Interior of garage: wide-spanning, complex-strutted steel roof trusses; continuous
sky-lights providing good top-lighting.
This bus garage superseded that on Bell Street increasing the capacity of
the Reigate garage to 170 vehicles ("Bell Street", p.114).
