SX 4554 NW PLYMOUTH SOUTH YARD, Devonport Dockyard

740-1/96/216 Walls and railings around reservoir

GV II


Walls and railings surrounding reservoir. Dated 1843. Granite ashlar and cast-iron. Triangular reservoir lined with granite and railings with urn finials.
HISTORY: first built to supplement the C18 old reservoir, to the N, and connected to the fire hydrant system. Contained 1860 tons of fresh water. Fire prevention was a continuing concern of the Yard offices, and this is included as an essential part of the working of the dockyard.
