Monument to Elizabeth Madox Brown in Highgate (Western) Cemetery

Monument to Elizabeth Madox Brown, d.1846. Designed by her husband, Ford Madox Brown. Stone cross in Gothic style above inscribed headstone with sacred monogram enclosed within crown of thorns; arms of cross contain reliefs of grapes and ears of wheat (an allusion to the eucharist and Christ's sacrifice). Footstone with circular finial containing a cross.

HISTORICAL NOTE: erected to the memory of the first wife of the Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown, whose design is held in Manchester City Art Gallery.
