Terrace of 4 houses and shops. Late C18, altered.
Multi-coloured stock brick with later patching.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys and basements or cellars. 2 windows each.
Gauged brick flat arches to recessed sashes. Parapets.
No.131: wooden double shopfront, restored and altered, having
small panes to windows and central double part-glazed doors
and inswept frieze with modillion cornice. Square-headed house
door to right with fanlight and panelled door. SUBSIDIARY
FEATURES: attached cast-iron railings to areas.
No.133: round-arched doorway with radial fanlight. SUBSIDIARY
FEATURES: attached cast-iron railings to areas. Mostly rebuilt
late C20; included for group value.
No.135: wooden double shopfront with pilasters having palm
leaf capitals carrying entablature with dentil cornice.
Segmental bowed shopfront with panelled risers. Rectangular
fanlight with radial pattern to central shop doorway; house
doorway, to left, has 6-panelled door and overlight.
No.137: wooden double shopfront, restored and altered, having
C20 segmental-arched shop window glazing above original
panelled risers and original entablature with dentil cornice
and one remaining elaborate stucco console with winged human
mask and rosette stop above. Central shop doorway panelled and
part margin-glazed with overlight. House doorway with
overlight to left, now blocked but overlight originally with
cast-iron relief Classical lamp.
INTERIORS not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: these houses and shops are, with Nos 159 and
161 Whitfield Street (qv), the only original buildings to
survive of a terraced street, all with early shopfronts,
associated with the former Fitzroy Market.
