National school, now part of village hall. c1870 for the
Grant-Thorold Estate, with later C20 addition. Red brick with
pantile roof. C17 Dutch style. Rectangular on plan, with
single room; entrance porch to north gable end.
EXTERIOR: Single-storey, 2 windows to east side. Chamfered
plinth. Porch has a board door beneath a chamfered 4-centred
arch, a square stone tablet above with a cross-slit in a
quatrefoiled roundel, and a pointed arched gable with moulded
brick kneelers, ovolo-moulded cornice and coping. Shaped gable
to main range with a square stone tablet bearing the initials
AGT, a small boarded square ventilator hatch above, and
moulded brick kneelers, raking cornice and coping.
Left return has a pair of original 3-light windows, with 8
panes to each light and chamfered wood mullions, in a
chamfered reveal with a stone sill beneath a chamfered lintel
and brick hoodmould. Ovolo-moulded brick eaves. Tall
projecting wall stack with tumbled-in brick to set-offs and a
chamfered square-section shaft. Rear gable end has similar
3-light window with small blocked opening above.
West elevation has a pair of blocked windows, and later
adjoining section.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
One of a series of buildings built for Alexander Grant-Thorold
of Weelsby Old Hall in a style matching that of Clee Hall
Farmhouse, Clee Road (qv).
The C20 addition is not included.
