and Cheshire Lines Inn
II
Formerly known as: The Cross Keys KING STREET.
Inn and livery stable, now public house and house adjoining.
Early C19, remodelled in early C20. Roughcast render on brick,
with some glazed tiling, slate roof on 2 levels. U-plan: main
range with wagon entry between inn to left; house to right,
formerly single-depth, now double depth; rear wings to both.
EXTERIOR: public house: 2 storeys; 2-window range (but
formerly the same height as No.83). Continuous flat-roofed
projection to the ground floor (replacing former bay windows),
with a dado of glazed tiling, and a central doorway
interrupting otherwise continuous fenestration of 6 and 6
lights with small-paned overlights; and at first floor a
central gable over a large Art Nouveau plaque lettered:
CHESHIRE / LINES / HOTEL, flanked by low 4-light casement
windows. The higher portion to the right has a
segmental-headed wagon archway in the first bay with a 2/2
sash above; and to the right of this is the house (No.83).
No.83; 2 storeys; 2-window range. Symmetrical, with a central
round-headed doorway protected by a gabled porch with a
round-headed arch (replacing a trellised Regency porch)
flanked by 8/8 unhorned sashes on each floor (those at first
floor square); and chimneys now on the front slope where the
former gables were. Rear wall of No.83 rebuilt in common brick
(one dated 1915).
INTERIOR: inn remodelled, house not inspected.
