(consec))

GV II

Terraced houses. Early C19. Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement. One window each.
Round-arched entrance with fanlight, those to Nos 22, 23, 27,
and 31 have decorated lintel and glazing bars of original
design. To the left is a segmental bay with tripartite
windows. Ground floor has banded rustication. First-floor
balcony with cast-iron brackets and railings. Segmental bay to
first floor which is off the axis of the ground-floor bay and
broader; tripartite windows. All windows are flat arched.
Storey band between second and third floors. Cornice and
parapet. In the course of C19 canted bays of various sizes
replaced the segmental bays: No.19 has a canted bay to the
second floor; No.23 a canted bay to the second and third
floors above the original first-floor bay; No.28 canted bay to
first floor only; No.29 2-storey canted bay; and Nos 26 and 30
have full-height canted bays. That to No.26 is most elaborate:
quarter pilasters rising the full height of the bay at its
junction with the front wall; the lintels have vermiculated
keystones; sills projecting on paired console brackets;
cornice to each storey of the bay. Originally Nos 24-27 were
treated as a large central pavilion, with Tuscan pilaster
strips at their party walls, and a pediment over the group.
Only traces of the latter remain, including a large volute
bracket, which can be seen at No.24. A volute bracket at the
party wall of No.21 suggests either that there might have been
another pediment in the row, or that all the party walls were
marked by a bracket in the parapet. Sashes of original design
to: ground floor of Nos 21, 22, and 31; first floor of Nos
20-22, 25, 27, and 31; second floor of Nos 20, 22, 25, 31; and
third floor of Nos 20, 22, 25, and 31. Mid C19 encaustic
pavements to stairs and walks of Nos 19 and 20. Cast-iron
window guards to first floor of No.28. Stacks to party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Railings to stairs and areas. Nos 19-31 form a group with Nos
1-13 and 15-18 Bloomsbury Place (qv).
