Semi-detached houses. c1845. Stucco, roof of slate.
PLAN/EXTERIOR: 2 storeys over raised basement, 2-window range
to Montpelier Villas, 3-window range to return.
In plan each house is wider towards the back with the entrance
in the resulting angle, and the front and back parts under
separate roofs. The front part: ground floor decorated with
banded rustication; first floor with long and short quoins.
Steps up to flat-arched entrance with pilasters and consoles;
overlight; segmental bay to basement and ground floor on the
street front, with flat-arched triple windows, and terminating
in a shallow dome above the storey band; basement windows have
6/6 sashes of original design; bracketed balcony to
ground-floor windows with cast-iron railings and fringed
canopy over; first-floor windows flat-arched with blind boxes;
westernmost first-floor window on the return blank.
The back part has a full-height segmental bay with tripartite
windows and margin lights to first-floor sashes. Eaves on
console brackets with paterae in the frieze; hipped roof with
stacks to front and back parts.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Cast-iron railings to entrance steps and front gardens, those
to front gardens with brackets; square, stuccoed, corniced
piers between each pair of houses in Montpelier Villas.
The 20 houses which make up the whole of Montpelier Villas are
of uniform design; such semi-detached houses are rare in
Brighton.
