Pair of semi-detached villas, 1885 by John Belcher for J.Thorneycroft, shipbuilder. Red brick, tile roofs, Orford House timber-clad upper storey, The Tides tile-hung. Two and a half storeys, each of three bays, an outer gabled wing in two bays, set forward, and adjoining single bays. Orford House: moulded rubbed brick pilasters to flat porch on timber brackets. Door of five panels under three-light overlight. Canted bay on brick base, with five-light window with metal casements in timber frames, the upper lights small leaded panes, and with moulded transome and cornice. Small paned sash window to right return of wing. Timber-clad overhung upper storey with tile hung apex to gable. First floor three-light and two-light mullion and transome windows with metal casements, the upper lights small paned. Door with overlight to right return. Second floor window of three small paned opening lights. Timber balcony over segmental arched bracket supported on central timber shaft. Ground floor segmental headed three-light timber mullion and transome window with leaded upper lights. Similar first floor segmental headed three-light casement with small paned upper lights. Full dormer of three small paned lights. Shaped gable with gable end stack. Ridge stack common to both houses. The Tides: entrance set back under red brick arch with moulded rubbed brick head. Door with pronounced stiles and rails and arched ahead. Canted bay on brick base, five-light window with metal casements in timber frames, the upper lights each of four panes, moulded transome and cornice. Small paned sash to left return of wing. First floor single and two-light casements, the upper lights each of four panes. Door to left return. Second floor three-light metal casement with leaded lights. Balcony mirrors that at Orford House, bracket completing segmental arch. Ground floor segmental headed timber three-light window, the upper lights leaded. First floor, similar two-light window the upper lights small paned. Full dormer of two replaced lights. Shaped gable with gable end stack. Interiors not inspected, Orford House said to have turned baluster staircase.
