Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3104SW CHURCH STREET
577-1/40/146 (South side)
Nos.20, 21 AND 23

II

Includes: No.27 KING STREET.
Terraced houses. Possibly C17 or C18 and later. Cobbles,
stucco, render, roof of C20 tiles to Nos 20 Church Street and
27 King Street, earlier tiles to Nos 21 and 23.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with dormers. No.20 has one window in
Church Street and one window and one loft door in King Street,
No.21 2 windows, No.23 one window, No.27 King Street one
window. No.20 is rendered with corner entrance and probably
C20 shop front to ground floor, both windows under a small
lean-to roof; flat-arched windows above and segmental arch to
loft door, gable to Church Street half-timbered in late C19 or
early C20, gabled and tile-hung dormers to roof, stuccoed
ridge stack. No.21 has stuccoed panelled ground floor with
flat-arched entrance and shop window under fascia; first floor
cobbled with brick dressings and segmental-arched windows with
brick quoins, all now painted, 2 dormers in roof and ridge
stack. No.23 is stuccoed all over with panelled ground floor
and shop windows under fascia; first-floor window segmental
arched, side stack. No.27 King Street is faced with cobbles
and has a possibly early C19 shop front with flat-arched
entrance and 3 x 5 paned window flanked by pilasters;
segmental-arched window to first floor, one gabled dormer in
roof. The presence of chamfered spine beams in the ground
floor of No.20 Church Street and No.27 King Street suggests
that these houses may be of relatively early date.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
A rare and notable survival, of earlier provenance than the
late C18/C19 development of Brighton.
