13/10/52 The Corn Exchange: entrance wing
(Formerly Listed as:
The Corn Exchange and Dome)
GV II
Entrance and lobby added to the Corn Exchange, Church Street
(qv). 1934. Designed by Robert Atkinson, FRIBA; sculpture by
James Woodford. Grey brick in Flemish bond with stone
dressings to the openings; the roof parapeted.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys over basement and a 4-window range. The
design is a highly stylised version of the Islamic forms which
Porden and Nash used in the early C19.
Metal marquee projects in front of a 2-storey, pointed-arch
recess; the tympanum filled with relief sculpture: the central
figure placed on a vesica piscis depicts the goddess Ceres who
assumes an Asian posture and aspect; to either side of her are
3 trumpeting angels who float on clouds.
To either side of the recess, the front wall projects slightly
to form turrets, the first-floor window of each is round
arched; to the left an added wing with a horseshoe-arched,
first-floor window; flanking the entrance itself are a 2- and
3-light window with twisted mullions.
INTERIOR: lobby of 2 bays, ceiled by quadripartite groin
vaulting, each cell is lit by a roundel. Of special note is
the wood panelling in the waiting room just outside the
conveniences. The entrance wing forms a group with the Dome
and Corn Exchange (qv) as well as with the Brighton Museum and
Art Gallery, Church Street (qv).
