Burial vaults and tomb in western
part of St Nicholas' graveyard

GV II

Burial vaults, flanked by steps to east and west, and forming
a terrace on the north side of the graveyard. c1840. By Amon
Henry Wilds. Random rubble and stucco. A range of vaults
fronted to the south by 14 bays designed in a Tudor-Gothic
style as if they were entrances to the vaults: in fact the
south walls are blank, and faced in stucco with Tudor-arched
'entrances' having studded 'doors' and figural labels now
mostly defaced, except that the second door from the west is
of wood, and real; buttresses between each bay with 3 offsets
terminating in pinnacles; parapet decorated with quatrefoil
decoration. The eastern steps are flanked by a pair of
octagonal piers with panels of terracotta or Coade stone
decorated with mouchettes, and by a stuccoed wall; the western
steps have a cobbled wall, possibly a replacement.
Tomb of Sir Richard Phillips. About one metre south-west of
the entrance to the cemetery. c1845. Stone table tomb with
base, moulded plinth, and recessed centre with inscribed
panel; railings missing.
